Forest Management Plan 2006-2040
MANAGEMENT PLAN HIGHLIGHTS
Plan Objectives:
Manage forests according to good forestry practices to sustainably produce high-value forest products
Enhance, conserve and preserve wildlife and fisheries values
Provide educational opportunities
Provide recreational opportunities
Rehabilitate waste lands and lands unsuitable for agriculture
Protect and conserve water resources by preventing erosion and establishing vegetative cover
Guiding Principals:
The County Forest is owned by the Corporation of the County of Renfrew, and will be managed according to County of Renfrew objectives
The County Forest is a working forest, and is not a parkland, a preserve, or reserved for single use
Recreational pursuits in the forest are a privilege, not a right
Forest management, forest health and associated forest operations take precedence over recreational activities
All activities within the County Forest must meet the objectives addressed in Section 10.2 of the Renfrew County Official Plan
Timber Management
County of Renfrew productive forests are divided into 14 distinct forest types, known as “Forest Units”. A forest unit is an area where trees are similar in species composition and natural development. Each forest unit has a specific set of management guidelines, known as “silvicultural ground rules” which help the forest manager to plan forest management activities such as frequency, location and types of harvest, tree planting, tending and site preparation.

Forest Unit Description | |
Code | Name |
CE | Lowland Cedar (cedar, ash) |
CM | Upland Conifer (spruce, balsam, fir, poplar, birch) |
HD | Tolerant Hardwood (maple, beech, hemlock) |
INT | Intolerant Hardwoods (poplar, birch, soft maple) |
LH | Lowland Hardwood (black ash, cedar) |
MW | Mixed Wood (mixed INT, CM) |
OC | Lowland Conifer (tamarack) |
OR | Upland Red Oak |
PJ | Jack Pine |
PR | Red Pine (mostly planted) |
PW 1 | Upland White Pine (white pine > 30%) |
PW 2 | White Pine Mixed Wood (white pine < 30%) |
SW | Plantation White Spruce |
When planning timber harvests, the forestry department tries to ensure steady, regular annual revenues for the County. The forestry department is self-sufficient, and actually earns money for the County. However, market conditions and the availability of harvestable timber influence what areas can be harvested and how much revenue can be generated. Sustainable, environmentally sound management is practiced regardless of revenue expectations.
Timber Sales
Renfrew County sells timber “standing”. Periodically, the Forestry Department advertises in local papers and via mailing lists to invite tenders on forests ready for harvest. Timber is sold “per unit”, such as by the cubic metre, to qualified forestry contractors. Most sales are awarded to County of Renfrew logging contractors or mills, although County residency is not a requirement. Timber can also be sold without a tender process, such as for salvage operations, when deemed in the County’s best interest.
