Well it is the start of chilly season, and leaves are falling and change is in the air. With the recent introduction of the County of Renfrew’s employee code of conduct document, the subject of “off duty conduct” has been openly discussed and this employer’s expectations of all their employees conduct has been the subject of much discussion. Education continues in this area and in the wake of the digital world and social media, our simple message to all our employees is; your conduct away from the workplace follows you if your actions represents harm to our organization. For years I have taught our Directors, Managers and Supervisors to conduct themselves as if they are being recorded or videoed at all times. The reality is in this digital age with everyone carrying a “smart phone” the risk of our actions being captured electronically is extremely high and the adage of “what would our councillors think” is always a guideline for the boundaries of conduct for all employees. Human behaviour however is unpredictable and while we have very few concerns about the majority of our workforce the reality is people will do some very strange things. I guess I could call this job security but trust me I would much rather employees treat each other with dignity and respect and that all their actions pass the test of transparency and professional conduct. Our code of conduct is intended to be a guide that is in concert with the various polices and standard operating procedures in our organization, in the end it is really about just using common sense both in and outside in the workplace.
Human Resources staff are available to consult on a variety of workplace initiatives. Our portfolio ranges from health and wellness programs to media promotion to one on one counseling or group training. At the core of our services is the expectation that all people will be treated with dignity and respect.
