Civic Address Process
The underlying reason for addressing rural properties is to enable the operation of 9-1-1, which is the universal emergency telephone number. A property must have its own unique address before the 9-1-1 system can work.
The importance of 9-1-1 in saving seconds and even minutes in getting the emergency call placed is well documented. Stop and think whether you have your fire department, police, and ambulance phone numbers memorized. Stop and think how difficult it is to give directions to your rural residence to someone not in the least familiar with the area. What if the person giving the directions is a guest or babysitter?
Aside from being a requirement for 9-1-1 service, a civic address will come into use as the address for your property. It will be your mailing address and the address on your driver's licence.
If you are a farmer directing a livestock truck driver, or a tourist operator advertising your business, or a person directing the department store delivery service, or the garbage disposal service listing pick-up spots, you should be able to imagine benefits from having a unique address.
As a result of the Civic Addressing Project, 9-1-1 became a reality for all residents of the County of Renfrew on November 24, 1999.
