Programs, resources and assistance

We offer a variety of programs, resources and assistance to help you access affordable housing in the County of Renfrew.

The Canada-Ontario Housing Benefit (COHB) is a portable, income-tested subsidy that helps eligible low-income households in Ontario afford their rent. Unlike traditional rent-geared-to-income housing, COHB is tied to the household, not a specific unit, allowing recipients to use it anywhere in the province.

The County of Renfrew received an allocation of 45 COHB subsidy spots for the 2025–2026 period. These subsidy spots are being filled by individuals already on the Centralized Waitlist for Community Housing and the By-Name List (BNL) used for homelessness enumeration and registration. The COHB has been prioritized for applicants with the lowest income sources who have special priority status under the Housing Services Act related to domestic violence or human trafficking, as well as for individuals who have experienced homelessness and have been registered on the BNL within the past 12 months.

Please note that referrals are not being accepted at this time.

To learn more about the COHB, visit the Province of Ontario’s COHB website.

The Affordable Homeownership Program  was funded through the Investment in Affordable Housing (IAH). Although this funding ended in 2019, a small revolving loan fund allowed the program to continue for several additional years.

Because the funding was provided as forgivable loans, homeowners who ended their agreements were required to repay a prorated amount, which was returned to the fund. Over time, these funds were gradually depleted.

The program is now closed and is not expected to reopen.  Updated June 15, 2026

The Ontario Renovates program provided financial assistance to homeowners through forgivable loans to support essential home repairs. This program was funded by the Investment in Affordable Housing for Ontario Revolving Loan Fund.

As of January 6, 2025, the fund has been fully utilized, and the program is now closed.

Funded through the Homelessness Prevention Program, the Emergency Minor Home Repair Assistance Program supports low-income homeowners with essential repairs so they can continue living safely in their homes. The program is currently being redesigned and applications will be available starting September 1, 2026. Updated June 15, 2026
